It was a wild finish to a game that was… interesting. Yeah, that’s a good word to desribe it.
At one point, I openly wondered what the good people of Bunbury had done, collectively, to warrant the punishment of housing a game such as this. At halftime, I sat back, had a look at the contest as a whole, and shook my head.
North started well enough, slotting three goals in the opening quarter, as the Eagles were held goalless. It set the Kangaroos up well but they stopped to a walk. Luckily for them, the Eagles seemingly could not hit the ocean from the beach, as they sprayed shots at goal like they were a drunk man at a urinal.
It wasn’t until the third quarter that things started to heat up. I’m not saying things were good, but at least there was some action. West Coast started to get their radar online, and North moved from a walk to a slow jog, but both teams seemed incapable of fully capitalising on the errors of their opponents.
And oh… there were errors. I haven’t seen that many errors since I completed my Year Nine maths exam. This may have been worse.
The Eagles were all over the Roos in general play, with their continued pressure and maniacal tackling finally reaping rewards in the third, as they went three goals up, but in the process, it appeared they ran out of gas.
The last ten minutes of the game was all North. They powered past the Eagles, with a superior fitness base, and finished with a flurry of goals to record a win in the game they sold to Bunbury.
Does a great finish wallpaper over what was a pretty ordinary game? Did we learn more about where the Kangaroos are at? Or the Eagles? Did HB get upset while watching the first half?
