The Problem With Succession Plans

ARE WE REALLY SURE… SUCCESSION PLANS ARE A GOOD IDEA?

When the Port Adelaide Football Club announced their plans to move away from the Ken Hinkley era, and transition to a new coach in 2026, I have to admit, I did roll my eyes. After all, we’ve seen this type of thing before.

The sad fact is, these things have a habit of not really going as planned.

I used to joke that the infamous Collingwood succession plan should have been renamed the “ion-plan”… because success wasn’t part of the equation after they moved from Mick Malthouse to Nathan Buckley.

The Pies finished runner-up in Malthouse’s last season at the helm. Under Buckley, they finished fourth in 2012, then sixth in 2013, 11th in 2014, and 12th in 2015. It would be another three years before Buckley would take them to a Grand Final…

… and lose.

Then you had the mess that was the transition from Alastair Clarkson to Sam Mitchell at Hawthorn. Remember that? Smooth as a baby’s backside, that process.

And now, here we are with Port Adelaide deciding thy’re going to dip their toe in the water with a plan of their own. How will it go?
