R19 – Port Adelaide v Richmond – What We Learnt

There are times when you watch a game of footy, and you can see the contrast between the teams.

This contrast is evident in game style, intent, and attitude. And right off the bat, I’ll put this out there; had Port Adelaide came to play with the same intent and attitude the Tigers brought to this contest, they would have won by 12-14 goals.

That’s not me being hyperbolic.

It is more recognising the efforts of the Tigers and the way they attacked the contest, and acknowledging that Port are a vastly better side on paper, that seemed to be waiting for their talent to carry them over the line… and I am not sure that is something that will serve the Power well in September. I expect them to make it. I expect they will win more than they lose in the run home and play finals footy, but when they come up against teams that can match them in terms of their personnel… well, if they’re going to be waiting for their talent to carry them over the line, they may be waiting a fair while.

We learn new things about teams every time we watch them. We see things come to the fore that shape our perceptions of teams. Let’s check out what we learnt from the Power’s 41-point win over the Tigers.
